Book Review :: 'Breach' by Amrita Chowdhury

Book Review (Part of The Book Club Blog Tours)
Blurb
Weeks before Acel is ready to file the global patent application for Colare, a wonder drug for pancreatic cancer, the research data stored at its offshore data center in Mumbai goes haywire and Dr. Udai Vir Dhingra, the charismatic, Ivy-educated young leader of its Indian business, gets blamed.

The trail leads to Raghu Damodaran, a precocious teen exploring the very edges of what can be done in cyber space, and then gets lost.

Battling market pressures, media leaks, livid American bosses and crumbling relationships, Vir must find the real perpetrators or see his career - and his life - spiral downwards. Swept into a shadowy world of masked online identities and muddied digital footprints, Vir discovers that nothing is easy or obvious, and everything has a price.

Set in Mumbai, Washington DC and Suzhou, in an online-meets-offline adventure of cyber threats and IP espionage, drug research and medical ethics, strained affairs and lost love, disillusionment and hopelessness, Breach is a clever, fast-paced thriller full of surprises.

My Review
Breach is a fast paced, cyber thriller which takes on the digital data-theft rampage over virtual world, an insecure medium, its risks not understood by most.

The pharmaceutical company Acel, is getting ready to file a Global Patent for a medicine ‘Colare’, which could be answer for a deadly pancreatic cancer, but they discover that the offshore data centre in Mumbai has been hacked. Critical data is stolen and replaced by corrupted one. The young, charismatic leader, in-charge of its India Operations, Dr Udai Vir Dhingra, is blamed for negligence and breach of security.

Book Review :: 'She Loves Me, He Loves Me Not' by Zeenat Mahal

Book Review
Blurb:

Zoella didn’t know whether she was devastatingly happy or happily devastated.

Zoella has been in love with Fardeen Malik, her best friend’s gorgeous older brother, since she was ten, but he’s always seen her as a ‘good girl’—not his type—and he can barely remember her name. Besides, he’s engaged to a gorgeous leggy socialite, someone from the same rarefied social strata as the imposing Malik family. In short, Zoella has no chance with him.

Until a brutal accident leaves Fardeen scarred and disfigured, that is. Suddenly bereft of a fiancĂ©e, Fardeen is bitterly caustic, a shell of the man he used to be, a beast that has broken out of the fairy tale world he once lived in. And a twist of fate lands him his very own beauty—Zoella.

This man, however, is a far cry from the Fardeen of her dreams. Stripped of her illusions, Zoella creates her own twist in the fairy tale, beating him at his own game.

Zeenat Mahal explores themes of love, longing and arranged marriages in this modern, unusual interpretation of the old-age fairy tale

My Review:
A classy, touching, South Asian flavour to the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale.

‘She Loves Me, He Loves Me Not’ by Zeenat Mahal is a heart-breaking romance between two unforgettable, lovable characters, splendid in the backdrop of joint family and its traditional values. The story makes one believe that beauty, really, is skin-deep, and it’s the inner strength and core values, which have the power to win true love.

Cover Reveal 'Unexpected Valentines'

Book Review :: 'Matches Made in Heaven' by Sundari Venkatraman

Book Review (part of 'The Book Club' Blog Tour)
Blurb:
A collection of 13 romantic short stories based in India; a culture rich country steeped in tradition. Inspiration struck me from newspaper articles, TV shows and hearing people talk. The short stories are based on that fact that arranged marriages thrive right alongside love matches in India.
  • Groomnapped is Ameya-Surekha’s story as a light romantic take on the serious issue of groom kidnappings.
  • Dark skin on a woman puts off men in general or so says the society. Beauty Is But Skin Deep is Nitin-Simran’s story that proves it wrong!
  • Ritu is twenty-five and wants to wait for her Prince Charming but her parents are desperate to arrange her wedding. Does she find her prince in An Arranged Match?

The Trophy

Short Story

The twirling continues to the never ending music and his infinite energy. He smiles and pulls me closer. I know he wants me to smile, loosen a bit, look around, pretend to enjoy. My eyes take a sensuous sheen when I relax, he says. I have had a couple of glasses of wine, one more than what I usually take, at his insistence. But it doesn’t help, knowing…

Knowing that the show will end, when the guests depart, the chandeliers are switched off, and the red dress will be off. I will be left alone in the gilded palace, lonely on the four poster bed, cold silken sheets… listening to my own yearning breaths, aching.

My fingers tighten on his, to bind him to me, and never let him go. He flashes his handsome smile again, but the next second, glances at the figure near the pillar, to the one who holds his heart, his devotion, his soul. I ache… oh how I wish…

Bringing his gaze back to the audience, he steers me around the periphery of the dance floor to show me off to his friends, relatives and the world. His trophy wife; envied by thousands, ignored by the one, perfect on the outside but broken inside.

Yet, I have lost my right to protest, the day I made the pact with him. This is my choice, my destiny… for it was I, who once rejected true love and coveted the golden cage.

It was I, who chose to be a trophy…

Get To Know Author Sarita Singh

Dear readers, today on ILF we are delighted to have Sarita Singh author of ‘Angelic Beats’, part if the blog tour by The Book Club.

Reading and writing have always been a part of Sarita Singh, who used to write her diary from a very young age. She believes in a few optimistic thoughts: “I am alright, I am happy where I am now, but I wish to be somewhere else. And I will try for it.”

Moving on to the questions…

ILF: It’s our pleasure talking to you Sarita, our first question is obviously related to the star attraction 'Angelic Beats'. What was the inspiration and idea behind it?
SS: I believe that every person on this universe has a calling. Sooner or later you recognize it. At the end of the day you know what you want to do in life just for yourself. Writing was my calling. Doing this makes me happy.

Then searching an idea for angelic beats was not difficult as I wanted to write about love. But only as a guiding force of life. The story was thought retrospectively. The end was decided first. So I thought of keeping the protagonist as a NDA cadet. The restrictions there helped describe the feelings of separation and they acted as a guiding force for the lady Aakanksha to look for other progressive avenues in life.

ILF: What were the challenges faced in writing Angelic Beats?
SS: Well, writing about such a prestigious academy was not easy. I had to do a lot of homework.

ILF: What are essential steps to be kept in mind after finishing the draft and before publishing?
SS: Patience is needed to decide the publisher. The time between completion of draft and getting published is really crucial. Don’t underestimate or doubt your creativity. Good editing is really indispensible and it garnishes the work.

ILF: What do you like most and least about being a writer?
SS: Writers are mirrors of society. They reflect society be it contemporary or of a particular period. The onus of being reflective of the society; truly and honestly, lies on the writer.  If my writing can inspire anybody towards life that can be biggest achievement of being a writer. When people show that confidence in you and approach you with their personal problems expecting a miraculous solution, it is really demanding and a bit awkward.

ILF: Upcoming writing projects in the works?  If so, when can we expect the fantastic book.
SS: Yeah I’m working on my next book. But no rush. I enjoy writing and do it as and when suitable to me and my family.

ILF: What’s the one thing about you that might surprise readers?
SS: Regarding angelic beats only, people get surprised that being a female I wrote the book from a male’s perspective. And of course, writing about  a defence academy where girls are not taken as cadets, too surprises them.

ILF: Advice for aspiring authors.
SS: Patience always pays. Don’t get let down by rejections. Trust your work and creativity.
Thank you Sarita for sharing your wonderful experiences and thoughts with us. All the best for your future endeavours.

Angelic Beats is the story of a boy in his late teens who falls in love with a married woman. Both defy their ages; the woman for her looks and innocence and the boy for his confidence and clarity in life along with integrity. The journey of the boy for his passion also becomes journey of love for both that finally takes them to more meaningful destinations. It unfolds the changing perspective of a young boy and a married woman in various situations of life treading the path of love and success together. How they carry on with love and friendship as a responsibility is quintessence to their journeys. Love can make one completely blind or it can candle all the darkness in life. Sometimes destiny becomes the greatest magician. It brings two opposite people, Sahil and Aakanksha, on one platform. Even their personal statuses do not match for one is married and the other single. One is confident about making choices in life, whereas the other is always scared of making a choice. One is always positive, and the other is negative in outlook. Unlike mathematics, where “+” and “−” always make “−”, sometimes in real life, “+” and “−“ do make a “+” together. On the road leading to his passion, he happened to meet the first love of his life too. Before going to the National Defence Academy for the journey to be a commissioned officer in Indian Air Force finally, he introduced “love” in her and his own life and pledged his heart to her. The arrows of cupid struck her also. Do their final choices engulf all other relationships like a storm and rage and bleed their self-esteem? Or are they able to carry their choices gracefully through their quest for happiness?
